This is a really interesting question and one that I’ve been fascinated by, and done a lot of research around, and even written a paper on. Because there is a lot of speculation out there and many women asking,  “is my stress causing my infertility?”

Of course, we know that stress can negatively impact our body, we are all aware of that from our own experiences. There are also studies out there showing that stress can impact infertility, but there are also other studies showing that it does’nt, so unfortunately from a scientific basis, the jury is still out.

Personally, from working as a Fertility Coach over the last decade, I have seen that in a minority of cases, stress, when linked with depression or a serious mental issues such as a past trauma, can certainly be a cause of infertility. I’ve found that once we work through and clear that trauma, this can then clear the way for pregnancy.

However, I would say that in the vast majority of cases, stress alone is just a minor factor. This is because infertility is often multifactorial. It’s not just one reason, there are likely to be other factors as well, such as lifestyle or environment.

On the positive side, this tells us that stress is an area that we can take control of – we can’t change a medical diagnosis – but we can work on our stress. And there’s been some really great studies showing how positive the impact can be when we do work on reducing stress. So I think rather than worrying around “is infertility causing my stress?,” forget that question because actually, that doesn’t matter. What does matter is what your doing to counteract the stress of infertility.

I’d suggest doing some of your own research into stress reduction strategies, such as relaxation practices, that you feel will work for you. There are some wonderful tools out there like fertility meditations, visualizations and fertility yoga that can really help you deeply relax your body and counteract stress.
